Interview with Vireak

Vireak how old are you and when did you come to SCAO?
I’m seventeen years old and I arrived at SCAO in 2009 from the Preah Vihear Province.

Where is Preah Vihear Province and how was your life there before joining the SCAO community?
It’s located in the very North of Cambodia. When I lived in the Preah Vihear Province I sometimes stayed at the house of my aunt and uncle, sometimes I stayed in the pagoda because there I could get some free food. I used to live there with my only sister because my dad and mum are not there anymore. Sometimes I had to work on the rice field to help my family. If I would not be at SCAO I would have to keep working on the rice field without the possibility to study English. My life would be very different, I’m sure.

How are your studies going at the moment?
At the moment I study in 9th grade at government school but I also attend SCAO school and study English in the New Interchange class from Monday to Friday at 5:30 till 6:30 pm. Right now we deal with all the tenses in the English classes. It’s hard, but it’s very important to learn about the tenses.

Do you know what you want to do after you finish high school?
Hopefully SCAO and a sponsor will enable me to go to university and study English, because I want to be an English teacher in Cambodia. But I also dream of working in another country like Germany or Australia – maybe as an English teacher too. This will bring me the chance to have a better life in the future.

Thank you Vireak for sharing some information with us.

As Vireak will finish High school in three years, we have to find a long term sponsor for him to support him.
